Ask Creditnet: Will My Credit Card Get Closed?

Dear Creditnet: My husband and I have one credit card each and the balances total about $1,200. Due to financial difficulties we have not been able to make any payments on these credit cards for almost a year. At one time we were getting letters from a collection agency, but we are now getting letters to pay our balance from the original creditor.

Americans cut credit card debt by $1.7 billion

There were two articles I read this Monday morning that had me feeling pretty good about ongoing credit card debt in this country.

First came a report originally published on May 7th by the Associated Press, which explained that American consumers had cut their credit card debt by $1.7 billion in March. The $846 billion we still owe in credit card debt is 17.2 percent less than the all-time peak of $1.022 trillion that was set in the summer of 2008, which as we all know is right about the time when the floor fell out from underneath us.

Can Medical Debt Hurt My Credit Scores?

YES! Unpaid medical debts can most definitely hurt your credit scores. Paying your medical bills on time and in full, however, will do nothing to improve them. Doesn't sound fair to the consumer now, does it? Well, it isn't, and lawmakers have even looked at legislation in the past which was written with the intention to wipe consumers' credit reports clean of "paid" medical debts that were delinquent at one point in time. The bill unfortunately never passed the House, so the issue remains unresolved.

Fed Says Fewer Americans Carry Credit Card Balances

The Fed's most recent Survey of Consumer Finances was released earlier this week, and in spite of all the negative reports concerning shrinking incomes and net worth, it actually contained some tidbits of positive news regarding credit card debt. They're hard to find among all the other depressing information, but hey, I'll take what little good news we get these days!

“Do as I say, not as I do.”

At some point or another, every child in the country will hear his mother or father utter this immortal parenting phrase.  If you've heard it, you know just how annoying it can be.

However, despite the inherent injustice of the phrase, it appears the younger generation of Americans has actually taken this advice to heart.  Well, at least in the world of credit card spending habits.

I'm On A Boat!

I woke up laughing this morning, shaking off a rather interesting dream. My everyday life had apparently intertwined with my upcoming beach vacation and a Saturday Night Live skit. Joined by my sidekick T-Pain, I was on the biggest yacht my eyes had ever beheld. We were sailing the Pacific, wearing tuxedos, and singing about how awesome it was to be on a boat. Then, out of nowhere, the dream went sour.

How to Get Rid of Debt and Keep Your Credit Cards

The bad news: you're up to your knuckles in debt. The good news: you can get out of debt. The better news: you don't have to destroy your credit cards! The slightly worse news: you still can't really use them.
